What is an NPN?
An NPN (Natural Product Number) is an 8-digit identification number issued by Health Canada.
It means the product has been:
- Assessed for safety
- Reviewed for ingredient dosage
- Approved for specific health claims
- Manufactured in a licensed facility
If a supplement in Canada does not have an NPN, it has not been reviewed by Health Canada and legally cannot be sold in Canada.
Why This Matters
Before receiving an NPN, brands must submit:
- Medicinal ingredients and exact dosages
- Supporting scientific evidence
- Non-medicinal ingredients
- Risk information and cautions
- Manufacturing details
Health Canada then determines what claims the product is legally allowed to make.
