What is St. John’s Wort?

St. John’s wort is a wild, star-shaped, yellow flower, named after John the Baptist as
it begins to bloom around the 24th of June, the feast day of St. John the Baptist.
This plant contains the active chemical hypericin, and this what gives the herb
most of its efficacy. Hypericin is believed to act as an  antibiotic , antiviral [2]  and
non-specific kinase inhibitor. Hypericin may inhibit the action of the enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase, leading to increased dopamine levels, although thus possibly decreasing norepinephrine and epinephrine. (1) Other Ingredients such as hyperforin and flavonoids may play a role.

With strong scientific evidence people most commonly use St. John’s wort for mild
to moderate depression.
